During the June / July School holidays, Lily, Year 11 was brave and embarked on an exciting international opportunity to volunteer as part of a medical internship, learning more about this dynamic working environment in Argentina, with Projects Abroad Global (@projectsabroadglobal). Immersing in the Spanish language and Argentinean culture Lily provides us with her reflection of this experience.
As some of you may know during the June and July holidays, I was lucky enough to have the incredible opportunity to volunteer in Argentina as part of a Spanish immersion medical internship. While over there I was able to immerse in the rich Argentinean culture, experiencing music, dance, markets and eating way too much of the amazing food. Whilst in Argentina I participated in a volunteer medical internship meeting an amazing group of students who were participating in the same experience. My group met numerous different surgeons, doctors, nurses, researchers and more. We watched multiple surgeries including a pancreatic tumour removal, the restructuring of eye muscles, urinary surgery, throat surgery and many more. We also took first aid courses, learnt how to do physical examinations, and visit medical museums. There are so many incredible stories and memories from this trip that I can’t even begin to fit in this post. It was truly a life altering experience, intellectually, within learning more academically and culturally, and socially allowing me to make lifelong friendships. The volunteers I was fortune to take this journey with where from across the world, all sharing the common interest in medicine. At first these where complete strangers, but after living with them and spending everyday with them for a month, they were family.
If anyone is interested in knowing more about any part of this opportunity, feel free to reach out.
