Experience an engaging showcase as the Year 10 Theatre Ensemble takes the stage for the first time in 2023, unveiling two captivating modern interpretations of timeless Greek masterpieces, Antigone and Medea. Guided by the expert direction of Miss Kate Russell and Mr Brad Jennings, with artistic support from Ms Laura Hague and a dedicated team of creatives and technicians, we will bring you two radically distinct renditions that shine a spotlight on enduring themes of integrity and treachery, loyalty and retribution.
Antigone – Antigone narrates a tale of authority, self-sacrifice, and vehement resistance. The city of Thebes finds itself torn asunder by a brutal civil war involving two siblings: one hailed as a hero, given a state funeral, and the other denounced as a traitor, left to decay. Out of the chaos, a dystopian regime of control, order, and surveillance emerges, under the rule of the unyielding Creon, who ascended to power through sheer ruthlessness. In the throes of grief and despair, their sister, Antigone, defies the ruler's edict, aiming to grant her brother a dignified burial, thus setting ablaze an impassioned act of defiance that will upend the very foundations of Thebes.
Medea – in this reimagined version of Medea, we find our protagonist, Medea, cruelly betrayed and discarded by her husband, Jason, who has chosen the youthful Princess Glauce over her. Medea and her resourceful crew have forged a precarious existence on the outskirts of Corinth, operating a chop-shop, while living in exile under the watchful gaze of Creon’s ruthless criminal syndicate. When Clauce delivers the devastating news of their imminent banishment, Medea hatches a sinister plan to exact a harrowing vengeance of Jason and his impending bride.
