On 12 June, the Year 10 Film students went on an excursion to the QUT Kelvin Grove campus to experience some of the new technology they have to offer. It was an experience to interact and get to know what a Film and Television degree would look like at QUT.
Once we arrived on the campus, we were greeted by Professor Mark Ryan, an Associate Professor in Film and Screen for the Creative Industries, who introduced us to the activities we would be participating in, and Film assistants Sue, Joe and Jason, who took one group to the film studio where they had a live morning show set, complete with a news desk, weather setup, host seats and a live band performance setup. Along with these sets, there were multiple cameras and a control room where students got a look into how to edit and switch cameras live.
In the second activity, students were shown QUT’s large OLED screens, and the tiny LEDs that make it up. We got so see the technology in use and were taught how they were able to manipulate the scenery using game engine software, Unreal, as well as the lightning and camera that is needed to achieve a realistic effect. We were then able to shoot our own short scene, with everyone becoming a role from actor to camera operator to assistant director. Finally, we got watch what we had filmed, and even switch roles and come up with our own original scene.
Students said they most enjoyed learning about the new technologies and getting the chance to interact and produce their own works in the hands-on experience. This experience allowed us to learn more about up-and-coming technology in the film industry, and how universities like QUT are evolving to match the ever changing world of Film and TV.
