Whilst not imitating the stereotypical nature of a public school environment, our building spans 7 levels and also includes our double height Gallery 61, our 350 seat theatre performance space, music and theatre studios, sound-proof recording studios, high end science laboratory, extensively equipped design technology workshop to the state-of-the-art film editing suite, refectory and more.

During our Open Days, families can expect to be introduced to our Alumni Panel and Principal Address, families then join a student-led tour of our unique learning spaces, or enjoy the space at their leisure. Curriculum and subject information will be located on level 4 to give families the opportunity to meet our empowered learning community. You’ll experience the spaces where our clever, creative and global young adults thrive in an environment of like-mindedness and collaboration.

DISCOVERY WORKSHOPS

Queensland Academies Creative Industries is pleased to offer Discovery Workshops to help students in Years 8 and 9 explore their potential across the International Baccalaureate curriculum.

There are no knowledge or experience prerequisites that apply to Discovery Workshops. Designed using a cooperative approach that merges elements from different subjects these hands-on workshops provide opportunities for lateral, collaborative, and creative thinking in fun and engaging ways with our world-class educators.

Current Years 8 and 9 students can actively engage in one, or two individual sessions during the day on the 20 May 2017. These workshops are a repeat of the same workshops previously held in February.

We look forward to meeting and helping you to discover the new, enhance the now, and set your sights on how you can be the best you can be at QACI.

Workshops are available for all current Year 8 and Year 9 students only and are available for booking now.

Mathematical Design (Mathematics and Design)

The same workshop will be available at these times: 09:30 – 11:30am | 12:00 – 14:00pm

Inquiry and problem solving are at the heart of Design thinking and Mathematical concepts. This hands on workshop aims to bring Mathematics to life, enabling students to learn and familiarise themselves with QACI’s very own laser cutter situated in our Design Prototype Lab.

In this workshop students will be introduced to Laser Cutting technology via the study of Geometric shapes.  Mathematics will be integrated with Design Technology to create design models and prototypes.

Students will work with shapes and transform pieces of box board from 2D to 3D structures. They will investigate the relationship between shape and volume.

CREATIVE PROCESS

Introduce -> demonstrate -> experiment -> reasoning -> reflection

At the completion of the workshop students will provide reflection on improvements to the activity, advantages / disadvantages to using computer aided software and accuracy of information.

Microscopic Structures (Visual Arts, Sciences, and Mandarin)

Qi – MicroArt

Inspired by the creative synthesis of Chinese language, culture and the scientific discipline of microscopy, workshop participants will produce a hybrid layered artwork using transparency as they develop an awareness of unseen nature.

Students can expect to explore language, microscopy, technology, visualisation, composition, drawing, painting, synthesis and analysis.

CREATIVE PROCESS

Research -> experiment -> develop -> resolve -> reflect

At the completion of the workshop students will achieve an articulation of process, own use of space, appreciation of cross curricular links, appreciation of cultural influence.

The Essence of Film (Film and English)

The same workshop will be available at these times: 09:30 – 11:30am | 12:00 – 14:00pm

Discuss and deconstruct the imagery and language of B-Horror Film genre to reconstruct a film narrative.

B-Horror Monster Mash

During this workshop students will discover how to deconstruct visual texts and create a mini film trailer by mashing old trailers from the 1950s – 1960s drive-in movie era known as “B-Horror”.

Students can expect to deconstruct movie trailers such as Jaws, Creatures from the Black Lagoon and It Came from Outer Space, to understand the codes conventions of the B-Horror genre.

Students will also produce a their own 40 – 60 second film.

Introduce -> discover -> decide -> create -> present -> reflect

At the completion of the workshop students will share their creations, receiving and providing feedback to celebrate their learning. Popcorn time!

Dancing with Language (Dance and Spanish)

The same workshop will be available at these times: 09:30 – 11:30am | 12:00 – 14:00pm

Journey around Spanish language nations and discover the cultural significance of their dance history through immersion in movement, language and song.

Bailamos

During this workshop we will work collaboratively to invite students on a journey of discovery of the Hispanic culture and language through movement and dance.

Students can expect immersion in real cultural experiences which involve language movement and culture of specific Hispanic dances.

Introduce -> identify ->explore -> identify -> composition -> physicalisation -> reflection

Students will share their creations, receiving and providing feedback to celebrate learning using language and movement. Fiesta time!

Upon a French Stage (French and Theatre)

Experiment with French language to compose theatre presentations and discover the richness of these two communication arts.

Atelier de théatre

In this workshop students can expect to learn and use French language to inform theatrical story-telling. Students will be introduced to theatre making, featuring improvisation, expressive movement and composition tools. They will also experiment with voice featuring French prosody and pronunciation. There are no language pre-requisites for this workshop.

CREATIVE PROCESS

Introduce -> Warm up -> tongue twisters -> composition -> physicalisation ->reflection

On reflection students will have the opportunity to feedback on frames and use of language and how these elements create meaning.

Musical Marketing (Music and Business)

The same workshop will be available at these times: 09:30 – 11:30am | 12:00 – 14:00pm

Explore the business of creating music for advertising and experiment with composition, performance, and recording.

We will work collaboratively to incorporate each other’s musical skills to create a short, original piece to advertise your given product.

Students can expect to connect the intention of the advertisement with the character of the music, bringing skills of marketing to understand your audience’s needs. Students will perform as soloists on their instrument/voice and work collaboratively to create an original music.

Introduce -> collaborate -> present -> reflect

As part of their reflection students will have the opportunity to discuss the process of collaboration in terms of the music and the advertisement. What worked? What didn’t?

Students will need to bring their own instrument and come prepared to share a sample of their solo repertoire. Students will have access to QACI’s drum kits, piano, large percussion instruments and amplifier.

What is the process for applying to attend QACI?

We are a selective entry independent public school therefore entry is not automatic or based on an enrolment catchment area. Applicants are required to complete an ACER test (Australian Council for Educational Research), followed by an interview with our Principal Gavin Bryce.
