Five minutes with the Year 12s
On the Couch with Tanya Wu

This fortnight we take 5 minutes On The Couch with Year 12 student Tanya Wu…

Why did you decide to come to QACI?

At the end of Year 9 my parents noticed that I really enjoyed that Arts. I loved film and dance and they took up most of my spare time. They suggested that I should consider attending QACI – I was reluctant at first as I didn’t want to leave my friends but, after visiting the school, I knew it was the place I was meant to be.

Year ten was a real struggle as I lived on the Gold Coast. Every day and had to take the train and the bus. Travel time each day was four hours to school and then back again. I also worried that I was not good enough and everyone around me seemed so much more talented. My mindset changed when I realised I did not have to be as talented as everyone else. I did not have to be amazing right now. I had come to QACI to become good at what I loved.

I am so glad that I persisted.

What is your Arts area?

Film! I have always been a bit of movie nerd. When I was young I loved watching action films and science fiction… I really wanted to discover the secret behind how a person could be transported beyond the ordinary into another world. I love learning about narrative construction and understanding the different aesthetics that exist within different film genres.

What do you want to do in the future?

I do plan to go to university and study a Commerce and Arts degree. I hope this will support my real dream, which is to work in the area of fashion and the media. There are so many available platforms these days for people to utilise and build their own brands and become entrepreneur.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Go out to see friends and just try to forget about study for a while.

Any advice for the year ten students?

Respect what you are given – it is such a privilege to study at QACI.
