On Friday 8th and Wednesday 13th of February, some of our year 10 students spent time in Gallery 61 to draw inspiration from Anita Hochman’s current art exhibition, Terrain, and craft their own short poems. Following a short discussion—based on our unit work thus far—about poetic language, some functions of poetry, and the production of meaning, students browsed the artworks until finding one that sparked an idea, feeling or emotion. After some short time to write, a number of students volunteered to perform their poems for the group while next to the artwork. Fortuitously, Anita was present on both days to hear their poems and share her thoughts and reactions to the words both her work and students’ experiences had inspired.
