Students in Year 11 Biology have been learning about the composting process in this week! Evie in Year 11 [pictured left] recently shared what the HL Biology students have been up to…
“To start off our International Baccalaureate Diploma journey, my fellow Year 11 HL Biology students and I have been studying Ecology as part of Topic 4. We’ve looked at a range of different subtopics including species, communities and ecosystems, the flow of energy, the carbon cycle and climate change.
Recently we completed one of our first hands-on practicals where we made compost in plastic bags. Before we started the prac, we learned about what compost is, how to make it and why it is beneficial. We filled plastic bags with a mixture of brown and green food waste and paper. We then mixed it all together, added a straw to allow air to oxygenate the compost, and sealed our bags. Over the coming weeks we will be able to check on our compost to see how it has progressed.
We are all so excited to be starting our IB journey and are eager to see what else is in store for us in HL Bio over the next 2 years.”
