Queensland Academies Creative Industries (QACI) student, Stefanie - Year 11, has participated in some amazing Spanish enrichment opportunities this year. Having completed the University of Queensland Institute of Modern Languages course in January this year, Stefanie was then accepted into the James Cook University Academy of Modern Languages course in July. These experiences enable Stefanie to confidently enter the MLTAQ Speech Competition.
Stefanie provides her reflection of the experience.
Apart from learning Spanish here at QACI since Year 10, I have enriched myself in multiple amazing opportunities outside of the curriculum with universities, including the UQ IML Course January 2021, JCU AML Course July 2021, and the MLTAQ Speech competition 2021. All these experiences have helped me apply my language skills in a real-world context, forcing me to go outside my comfort zone and practice my Spanish skills such as speaking, writing, reading, and listening.
Particularly for me, the UQ IML course in January was my favourite experience, as it helped me gain so many valuable skills before I even started Spanish in Year 11, including conjugation of past and future tenses, pronunciation and conversational skills, language structures, vocabulary and more. I was excited to learn past and future tenses, which would expand my vocabulary and range of topics I could speak in Spanish widely, mostly helping me in my oral and writing exams. This was so great before I started Year 11 since it already gave me an introduction to most things I would learn in Year 11, so I would already have a head start to advance my Spanish skills in class. As a result, this course has developed and further improved my Spanish linguistic skills so much, and so far, I have achieved only A’s and 7’s for Spanish.
Overall, these were such great experiences that I was genuinely engaged with because of both personal interest and academic pursuits, and I definitely recommend them to anyone studying a language in their educational journey.
I am very grateful to the Institute of Modern Languages (IML) at the University of Queensland (UQ) and James Cook University (JCU) for allowing high school students the opportunity to work with university tutors for a week, and for free! The programs have taught me so much which I will utilise for the next two years studying Spanish in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.
