This year, QACI was selected as one of ten South East QLD schools to host a slam poetry masterclass called SlammED! As part of the 2019 Queensland Poetry Festival. The students were given the opportunity to learn the skills of poetry in a two-hour masterclass hosted by recognised author and slam poet, Josh Donellan.

The students were given the challenging task of writing a poem within a short period of time and performing their work in a heat during school assembly on the same day. The top two students were to be invited to perform at the SlammED! Final at the prestigious Queensland Poetry Festival in the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in late August.

During the two-hour workshop, Josh taught the students a variety of ways to brainstorm ideas for their poem. The class shared their work and received feedback in an open environment.

During assembly, it was with a great amount of courage that the students performed their personal pieces of work in front of a live audience. The judges were randomly chosen from the QACI theatre. Randomly… in hopes of it being a fair game…

The judging consisted of three students and two teachers. The audience cheered and clapped in support. When the results were shouted out, the audience cheered and booed, in agreement or in opposition.

In the end, when the scores were announced, it was revealed that the top 2 students who will represent QACI are …

Aoife Kissane (Grade 11) and Isabella Molloy (Grade 10)! Congratulations to the two winners! We wish you all the best in the upcoming competition! GO QACI.

Thank you, Ms Jeffreys and the English department, for organising the assembly and the workshop.
