QACI welcomed Kate Stephenson to Group 6 The Arts this year, teaching both Theatre and Dance. We took the time to ask Kate a few personal questions to learn more and introduce her to our valued QACI community. Here is what she had to say...
Please tell us a little bit about your teaching career?
I studied a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance and Drama and a Masters of Teaching (Dance & Drama) at QUT, graduating in 2021. Prior and during my university studies, I worked as a dance instructor in studios teaching RAD and CSTD syllabus, worked at Queensland Ballet teaching Dance for Parkinson's disease classes, delivered primary dance education in schools and worked as a dance presenter for an online dance curriculum program with Dance Cart and delivered inclusive dance at Red Hill Special School. I am also a certified Pilates instructor and look forward to introducing strength and conditioning to the QACI Dance program.
What do you love about teaching?
My students inspire me to continue practicing my artform and stay active in the dance industry. My creativity and zest for learning is renewed and I feel as though I am thriving in this unique environment. I really enjoy strengthening students' ability to think critically and creatively and watching these skills transfer to other learning areas. I am so lucky to be teaching at QACI.
What is something that your students are yet to learn about you?
I am a huge advocate for sustainable fashion and purchase 90% of my wardrobe second hand. In my spare time you can find me perusing the racks of an op shop looking for a bargain. Fun fact - I previously ran a small side hustle dedicated to cyclic fashion where I would curate wardrobes and resell them online.
QACI Highlight so far?
Reconnecting with the wonderful Year 11 and Year 12 Dance students after teaching them during my university practicum in 2021 and building relationships with my delightful Year 10 Dance and Theatre students.
