A Reflection on International Women's Day by Luana Lima (Y12)

#BalanceforBetter

"International Women’s Day, inherently, has two meanings: either a simultaneous celebration by women around the world, or a celebration of women around the world. Yesterday, Community Queensland did the latter. Yesterday, Marina, Jessica, Caitlin and I headed to QACI's neighbours at The Exchange Kelvin Grove community centre to participate in a morning tea event that celebrated the greatness of womanhood - and it was an invaluable and unforgettable experience. We were able to talk to women who’d never left Australia and others that had arrived a few months ago from places such as Iran, Mongolia, and Costa Rica - including an Indian Zumba instructor.

Over the course of two hours, I was taken around the world by their traditional dishes and stories, and the overwhelming international message: Appreciate what you have. Consideration and time are more important than you’ll ever believe. The small kindness of being genuinely interested in an other’s country and culture will change their day. Embrace what you don’t know. And never be afraid to indiscriminately whack people across the face if it’s in the name of dance.
