On Friday the 7th and Saturday the 8th of June, Year 11 theatre students showcased their performance in “Aufstand”. Aufstand is German for ‘the standing’, having undertones of an uprising or revolt.

This term, theatre students studied the theatrical style called Epic Theatre. Epic is a style of theatre that gained movement during the 20th century. It allowed artists to express their view on society and created what we know today as political theatre.

Each group was given the task of conveying a political message in the style of Epic theatre. Through art, the students were able to voice their political opinions on a range of topics including; feminism, climate change and consumerism. The showcase aimed “to tell four Brechtian plays in one hour, for the price of none”. The four plays performed were; Mother Courage, The Good Person of Szechwan, Caucasian Chalk Circle and Life of Galileo

Mother Courage is about a saleswoman battling between her own instincts to survive and fiercely protecting her children during the war. The Good Person of Szechwan follows Shen Teh, a young woman struggling to keep her business alive and is forced to invent an alter ego, Mr Shui Ta. Caucasian Chalk Circle is about a peasant girl who rescues a baby, turning out to be a better mother than its biological wealthy parents. Life of Galileo follows the legendary astronomer and physicist Galileo Galilei and his struggle to prove the theory that the sun is in the centre of our universe.

Whilst the plays relied on largely interpretative performances, the audiences experienced the creativity, energy and maturing acting prowess of a dedicated theatre group.
