Year 11 Absurd Theatre Performances

'Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.' [Samuel Beckett]

On September 3-4th, the Year 11 Theatre Ensemble performed A Little Bit Absurd, an evening of original theatre performances in the QACI studio, written and produced by the cohort. These performances were in the style of Absurd theatre, and consequently, students created their pieces by exploring complex existential questions through practical workshops and exercises. Absurd Theatre draws on the use of nonsensical comedy and cliches to communicate a lack of meaning in the world and a desire to find purpose and control in the uncontrollable.

Each piece was collaboratively devised and written in groups, resulting in a varied and dynamic show; audiences were transported to a circus, a film set, an office and a reality TV show, arriving back in time for tea. Teamwork was a fundamental element of the showcase, seen throughout each piece, each transition act, and each transition as the ensemble worked together to help set up each set.

What was your favourite part of the experience?

'Getting to hear the audience's reactions to what we had made was awesome' - Zeph

'Being backstage and feeling the energy, especially during funny moments of the show' – Sarah G

Describe the experience in 3 words.

'Curious, exciting, different' - Ruby

'Crazy, fun, amazing' - Ema

Favourite Quote from the Show

'I'm going round in circles. Circles are round. What else is round? Pizza!' - Adam

This showcase was a brilliant demonstration of the passion and energy the Year 11 Theatre Ensemble brings to performance, and the hard work and dedication was evident throughout each piece. Many thanks to Mr Brad Jennings and Mr Dan Crestani for their support with lighting, sound and staging, as well as their assistance with the creation of each piece. Congratulations to the Year 11 Theatre Ensemble for creating an engaging, entertaining, and resonant night of theatre!
