The Queensland Academies for Creative Industries (Kelvin Grove), Science Mathematics and Technology (Toowong) and Health Sciences (Gold Coast) are pleased to announce an exciting new initiative for Education Queensland.
The Young Scholars Program will provide highly capable primary school students from years 5-7 with challenging enrichment opportunities. At this stage, it is a pilot program involving state primary schools in the Gold Coast, and Brisbane Central and West districts.
Young Scholars are to be nominated for the Young Scholars Program. The selection will be based on the following criteria:
To qualify for the Young Scholars program, the student must meet at least one of the following criteria

2. 95th percentile on a subscale (e.g. verbal performance) of an individual IQ test
3. A score well within the top band of the NSW Basic Skills Test (literacy or numeracy)
4. A High Distinction or Distinction in the Australian Schools Science, English or Mathematics

5. A letter from the school confirming that the student’s academic performance or potential in
the subject areas of Mathematics, Science or English is within the top 10% of the student

Once the student has been accepted into the program, they will be sent information which will include:
A log-in password to the Young Scholars website. This continuous online support will provide the student with a host of different activities, challenges, resources and other gifted and talented programs.
As well as the continual online support, there will also be opportunities to participate in gifted and talented workshops, which will be hosted by the three Queensland Academies throughout the year. A number of workshops will be run in partnership with GERRIC (Gifted Education Research Resource and Information Centre) as well as workshops run by Queensland academy staff.
There will be parent lectures offered and also professional development opportunities in gifted education for teachers from the Young scholars associate schools program.
Students who do not attend schools from the pilot districts are welcome to apply for non-associate Young Scholars membership, which includes access to the workshop program and the parent programs.
